Being A Foreign Exchange Student
I'm thinking about being a foreign exchange student in Germany hopefully and i was wondering if anyone's ever been an exchange student. I was wondering what is it like and how what did you do to become one and any info would be good thanks.

i've been interested in doing that for a long time. talk to your school counselor and they will be able to hook you up with some information.

Re: Being A Foreign Exchange Student
I have a friend who went on the Congress-Bundestag Scholarship, and she said she had a great time with that.
Some other organizations I found (though I know nothing of their credibility) are:
American Intercultural Student Exchange Program
Two Worlds United
and BCHLA
Hope that helps.

I had the notion that you'd make me forget the world...But your undecisive mind shows me that you are "just another guyl"...I had the feeling that those looks you gave me were real...What if I ripped your heart apart at the seams maybe then you'd know how I feel...

Re: Being A Foreign Exchange Student
do you mean where you stay with a german family? i did a french exchange and hated it, but my sister 4 and loved them, so i guess it depends on the family you're staying with.....but if that wasn't what you meant, please ignore me lol!
i know what i feel, but i'm afraid to show it, inside, so real, no one else could know it, the whole truth and no lies, cutting deeper i can hear my soul cry, come on testify.

Yes, keep in mind that not everyone will have a good experience, but MOST DO! And most programs that you would go on have contingency plans if something is wrong with the family, or you just don't get along with them at all, or things like that. For the most part these programs will work with you to find a suitable family.
That said, I have done programs in the past. I did one twice (2 different years) through my school which set me up with a family for about a month. I have made great friends over there and still talk to them. I am planning a year in Munich Germany through another college which will have me living in Munich on my own in an apartment with other Americans. Then the summer after that (2005) I plan on taking about a month and a half in Besan?on France which will have me staying with a French family, since my French SUCKS. Oh well, that's why I'm going there... to improve it!
Doing a foreign exchange program is a wonderful way to broaden your horizons, make new friends, and improve foreign language skills. I highly reccomend it for a lot of people! There are also lots of scholarships offered through the program usually, so money shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Re: Being A Foreign Exchange Student
Hey,
My family has hosted foreign exchange students for years. They come through certain programs, and then are placed in our home.
From what I've heard, every place not in the US that hosts students are like the TOP 10% of wealth from their country, so you might be in luck. I've heard that students even stay in castles.
Go talk to your counselor..they'll know what to do.
Cheers,
Jenna

Re: Being A Foreign Exchange Student
Thanks for your help everyone! I heard at my school you have to have passed German 3 to be able to do the exchange program and I'm currently only in German 2 so it'll be about two years before I'll be able to I guess and I can't wait.

Once I set my heart on something, I just won?t quit until I get it.
Even if it starts looking like the wrong thing to go after, you know?
I don?t stop to question it; I just go for it, figuring once I?ve got it, I?ll worry about the rest.
