Calling All English Citizens
What does freedom mean to you?
I am writing an essay defining freedom and I'm trying to get different povs from citizens of other countries.
Even if you're not from England, please define freedom as it pertains to you. Also state the country you are from.

Scotland.
Freedom is a right to be unrestricted in life and make your own choices and decisions.

Re: Calling All English Citizens
United States.. Oh joy.
Anyways Freedom to me means not having to live in fear of never knowing when one persons ignorance can cost you your life. Not having to worry about sending your kids into school and wondering whether you'll see them alive again. Not having to go out into the streets everyday worrying about whether you'll be kidnaped for terroists pleasures.. Not having to worry about people constantly judging you because you believe in something different then other people do. It's being able to say what you want to say without being judged differently. Being able to dress/think/feel how ever you want to. Being able to marry who you want whether it's a man and a man or a woman and a woman.
Being able to listen to, or watch what ever you wish to listen to or watch without having to worry about it being censored constantly. Being able to speak out and actually be heard even if it is only once in a while...
Okay sorry that was kind of long but those are just some of the things that represent freedom to me.

Re: Calling All English Citizens
Yep, I live in England although probably definitions of freedom aren't likely to be that different here than to other western countries. For me, freedom is about having the choice in my life to do what ever I want as long as it it has no negative consequences for anyone else. For example I'm entitled to air my own opinion as long as it is not discriminatory or in any way disrespectful.
We have a certain degree of censorship here, for example political parties such as the BNP (British National Party) which is both racist and incites racial harrassment and violence is prevented from publishing books and advertising themselves freely but the less extremist parties are not. Also our media is pretty free to criticise our government and by doing so keeps it in check with the people's wishes.
If you define freedom as being able to do whatever you want, whenever you want then that is not we have, because if you commit a crime you will be arrested. On the other hand, in theory we have a society in which a person has the freedom to walk the streets without being attacked, the freedom to express themselves and also equal oppotunties to education, employment and support.
I'm guessing that's very similar to the US...

Canada - Freedom is having the right to say what you want and basically do what you want as long as you follow rules, or laws, which are enforced to keep us safe

Re: Calling All English Citizens
i live in the US.
freedom, to me, is expressed most clearly through our constitution and bill of rights. the freedom of speech, to petition, free press, etc. are all essential to any truly free nation or land.
however, personally freedom can be defined many different ways, in many walks of life. in my political stance, every person on this earth should know that they are entitled to the initial freedoms that are guaranteed and protected by our government (although i realize that this is not the case...). everyone has a baseline of freedoms as a human being and some of these are merely listed through government in order to protect them.
freedom is also a state of mind, varying from country to country, person to person. young and old may have different perceptions of freedom merely because the times have changed--but the definition must change with the times or it loses its meaning.
freedom is living with the mindset that i can do all things possible to ensure my safe existence. with freedom i am safe from harm, able to communicate without censorship, and i am not persecuted for characteristics that define me. freedom is both the shield and the sword; protecting me and defending me.
hope that helps. that's all i could come up with on the spot.

Freedom, hmm.To me its Freedom of speech, freedom of assocation, freedom of prejudice, freedom of not being scared of being arrested for nothing, not being held down. But it can't involve negative consequences for anyone.
