So my boyfriend (who's just a sophomore in highschool) thinks he wants to be in the Coast Guard once he gets out of high school..I've tried looking up exactly what the Coast Guard entitles or does..but its slightly confusing.
I asked my cousin what the US Coast Guard did and all she said was that they move around alot.. I am going to college this year for Music Therapy and I eventually plan to set up my own practice (either in the house or nearby)..and I also plan to be w/ my boyfriend then too..But that creates a clash if he has to be on the move and i want to set up a practice...
Anybody have any general information for me?

Re: Us Coast Guard
My dad was in the Coast Guard the entire time we were growing up. Mostly we were based in Washington, where he worked at the Port of Seattle. But yes, we had to move a lot. We moved a total of 8 times and lived in 5 different states. It was very hard, but at the same time I wouldn't have wanted a lifestyle any different. I got used to changing schools at a young age so it became no big deal, and eventually we got to settle down for a few years, which gave me the opportunity to bond with some very good friends at school. Plus, it's amazing to get to experience the countryside and living in different parts of the U.S. (I have lived from Connecticut to Seattle!)
If your boyfriend wants to join the USCG, he's most likely going to need to attend the U.S. Coast Guard Accademy, which is situated in New London, CT.
The Coast Guard doesn't only move around a lot. Usually they are stationed at sea ports, so most of the time they will be near the coast. The Coast Guard is part of Homeland Security and is one of 5 branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. They perform duities such as:
- Search and rescue
- Protect American soil
- Launch small boat missions
- Launch aircraft missions
- Seize narcotics
- Intercept illegal immigrants
- Perform port safety checks
- Respond to oil/hazardous chemical spills
- Enforce boating safety laws
- and more.
However, to many people, joining is well worth it. For example, the benefits that my father received included:
- Complete medical and dental care at no cost (while in active duity)
- Covered for up to $250,000 in life insurance for less than $20/month
- Government on-site housing
Since my dad served many years ago, though, the USCG now probably has more benfits available.
Hope that helped!

^That is an overall site explaining the Coast Guard for you.
http://www.gocoastguard.com/
^Talks about actually getting into the Coast Guard, what it takes, etc.
http://www.cga.edu/
^Info about the university he would attend before becoming a coast guard.
Hope those help.
And about your business, if you want to make it right out of your home then couldn't it move with you? Just think of getting a new batch of clients everywhere you go!
Plus, your boyfriend is only a sophomore now. Don't worry about this just yet.
