A fair amount of it. I've been hearing things about this for about 4 or 5 years now, and all have said pretty much the same thing. I don't think there's much scaremongering going on where this is concerned.

Did you bother to read the article? When the volcano erupts the lava will pour out over one thousand cubic kilometres which is enough to cover the whole of the USA with a layer of lava five inches thick. Anything not killed by the lava would die from falling ash or from the explosion caused by the volcano erupting. Furthermore, the long-term effects could be even more devastating. The thousands of cubic kilometres of ash that would shoot into the atmosphere would block out light from the sun, making global temperatures collapse. This is called a nuclear winter. A large percentage of the world's plant life would be killed by the ash and the drop in temperature. The resulting change in the world's climate would devastate the planet.
