Hurricane Heads for Landfall in Canada
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP) - Hurricane Juan headed for landfall in Nova Scotia on Sunday with sustained winds of 100 mph and higher gusts, threatening wave surges of 5 feet on the coast, forecasters said.
Canadian officials issued hurricane wind warnings for Nova Scotia, though Juan was expected to weaken as it hits colder waters before reaching the shore.
``By this evening, you'll be getting the full effects of this storm in Nova Scotia,'' Chris St. Clair, a forecaster with the Weather Network in Canada said.
The storm was expected to hit land near St. Margaret's Bay about 25 miles west of Halifax at around high tide, bringing up to 4 inches of rain.
At 5 p.m. EDT, Juan's maximum sustained winds of 100 mph were down 5 mph from earlier in the day, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. It was a Category 2 hurricane, a rating for storms with sustained winds of 96 mph to 110 mph.
Juan was centered about 240 miles south of Halifax, moving north at near 23 mph. That was up from 12 mph earlier, and it was expected to accelerate even more later Sunday.
Margaret Murphy, spokeswoman for Nova Scotia Power, said crews were on standby in case lightning strikes, high winds or falling branches cause power outages Sunday night.
The last hurricane to hit Nova Scotia was Gustav on Sept. 12, 2002. It caused little damage, though it dumped more than 3.9 inches of rain and had wind speeds of over 75 mph.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Kate swirled in the Atlantic far from land, a day after forming. Its center was about 1,240 miles southwest of Lajes in the Azores Islands. At 5 p.m., Kate had maximum sustained winds near 60 mph and was moving north northeast near 12 mph.
The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

Re: Steve :(
I'm surprised as hell. A category two hasn't made landfall in Nova Scotia in about 25 years... this is big news...

Sammy, that's because North Carolina and Virginia are your shields...lol
You also have something called the Canadian mountains with massive coldfronts keeping tropical depressions from affecting you. You have an enormous shield there.

Re: Steve :(
Ahhh! I hope Steve doesnt get blown away I'll miss my super-ninja-bodyguard
Disarm you with a smile
And cut you like you want me to
Cut that little child
Inside of me and such a part of you
Ooh, the years burn
I used to be a little boy
So old in my shoes
And what i choose is my choice
What's a boy supposed to do?
The killer in me is the killer in you
My love
I send this smile over to you
