Two Computers

Post by The Black Hat »

Ok I have this issue...

I have a newer Gateway computer and an older (1999) Compaq computer and I want to connect them together. I want to be able to share files between both computers, online, and offline. How do I do this?
Respectfully,

Easiest method - put a network card in EACH COMPUTER and then use a CROSSOVER cable to connect them. * A crossover cable is a regular ethernet cable with 2 wires crossed with one another, hence the name crossover * Once crossover cable is in place, make sure both network cards are configured on the same IP Network - 192.168.0.xxx and 192.168.0.yyy (you can replace the 0 in the 3rd octet if you want with a number between 0 and 254, but I like the 0)

Once this is done, ping the other computer from the dos prompt

for example

ping 192.168.0.1

if you get responses - they are communicating and you should now see the other's files and shares

I've got networked computers up the wazoo. If one has Windows ME or higher i know that it can create a home networking disk for oolder systems. Either way I find the best method for connecting two computers like that is to network them by connecting them both through a router, which is really easy if you have cable, because chances are you are already networked. If not using something like aim in sort of the ghetto networking method, where you just send files back and fourth. Rock on.

Router = $50+

Straight Through Cable to connect to router - (depending on size) $10+

Times this by 2 as you will need 1 cable per computer

Network Card for computer A

Network Card for computer B

-----------

Easy way: Least expensive

Network Card for computer A

Network Card for computer B

Crossover cable - $10+ (depending on size)

It doesnt matter what currency you think this is in, the principal is the same. It's more expensive to use the router, but yes it does have extra added features. It all depends on what you want to do. If you just want to share files and shit, the Crossover cable is more to your liking, especially since it costs a shitload less.
