Memory

Post by Trapped »

If you have an old computer, that's been restored, and supposedly has a whole free (space-wise) drive (but you dont' know how to get to it), why might it say that your virtual memory is low and constantly dumps the hard drive?

For more space, can't you just delete some files that you don't need?

How do I use the other drive, and put jus the basics or things I use everyday on there?

(If you couldn't tell, I dont' know (and don't really care to know) much about computers. I'm ok with asking lots of questions.)

Ok, you have two hard drives?

You want to know if your computer could just use the other hard drive for the virtual memory?

I suppose it can be done. But yes for now delete some programs you dont use or dont need from the master hard drive.

ok, assuming this is a win 95/98/me/xp/2000 machine, just go to my computer, right click on the icon and click propterties, then go click on preformance, then click on virtual memory then click on "let me set my virtual memory settings. This will allow you to set wich drive you want to use.

Btw, what's virtual memory? Yes, I have two, and running Windows 2000.

Windows makes a temp file with the extension of .386 and it uses the hardrive to store data from games or programs you are using or have used, in addition to your RAM to better the preformance of your computer.

No, virtual memory is not the icons on your desktop. Virtual memory is RAM that is simulated by the operating system in case your real RAM (Random Access Memory) is low or all being used. This is always stored in a page file or swap partition and is typically two times the size of your amount of REAL RAM. So, if you have 512 MB or real ram, your pagefile is often 1024MB. But in Windows it's the size of your RAM (physical memory) PLUS the amount of space allocated by the operating system. Virtual memory is also a hell of a lot slower than RAM (physical memory) as its stored on the hard drive. Page files/swap partitions increase performance a lot because they take some of the load off of RAM.

Its ok. :) If you're ever confused about a computer term. Go to google.com and search for this "what is <term_goes_here" so basically, if you want to learn about what a CPU is.

Search: "what is CPU" without quotes

or: "what is RAM" without quotes

or: "what is AGP" without quotes.

etc....

At the top of the search results will be something called "Web definition" and there it is. :)

Go ahead and try it.

Most likely there is too much starting up, opening and running at all times.

Check the bottom right hand corner where the time display is. type what is running or see what is running (hover your cursor over each icon for a second and it will tell you what it is)
