Original Overclocking

Post by Sam! »

I really do need a Mac Expert for this one...

I have an iMac G4/800mhz 15" (Jan '02 model) Superdrive, 60Gb, 512 MB and I'm interested in overclocking it slightly to 900 mhz or so. I know this is dangerous and I'd rather not open it up, can this be done by software?

Please provide more than just a link.

CHANGED NAME OF MY TOPIC TO PREVENT CONFUSION.

i doubt it can be done through software Sam...

on a PC there are only 2 methods of truetly overclocking it. Either hardware wize by soldering something on it, or something of the sort...... OR through the BIOS. Because mac's do not contain BIOS's... i dont think it can be done without opening the case

I can't think of a better use of server resources... I really can't.

If I was to open the case, A, it would have to be less than obvious that I did so... basically my Dad can NOT find out, and B, it would have to be a safe process. If I did so, how would this work?

I assume it would void my warranty... if I still had one... wouldn't it?

yep because you are now taking your CPU FASTER than what it's supposed to handle safely within the grounds of their warrantee

Man, I wish I could make my computer faster, but they don't have a processor upgrade and this sounds dangerous. Would adding more RAM actually DO anything?

Absolutely

Think of it this way

Can you prepair a full meal with a SMALL TABLE to do things on? sure.... but would it be faster if you had a big table? Yes, because then you can make brocolli, coliflower, red peppers, green peppers, onions 1 after another and THEN take it to the stove..

RAM is like the tabletop. The more you have, the more can be done at 1 time. However, there is a point where a LARGE tabletop will make it MORE TIME CONSUMING to use it all... That also happens in computers but its not TOO much of consern... i have 1.5 gigs in my machine and it runs fine.... but ADDING MORE may make it slower.... i always say stay below 2 Gigs of RAM if on a workstation/home computer....

Servers use memory much differently so 6 or 9 gigs of ram (9 GIGS is on the server that HT is located on) is optimal for Servers.

Wow 9 gigs lol. I have a computer that only takes a gig... and I have 512. Would a gig be too much?

Gig is perfect. I wont work on anything (by choice...) if it doesnt have a gig of ram in it. (unless i have to for work).

Any laptop i get, any PC i get MUST have 1-2 gigs of ram
