Dyeing My Hair
Well, I have really dark hair, like most people would say it's black.
I want to dye my hair red though. My best friend did it for me today but it hasn't come out that well. Do I *have* to use a permanent product to make the dye come out stronger? Or could I just leave a semi permanent in for like, 3 hours, to make it take to my hair better?
*edit - I can't spell

Re: Dyeing My Hair
Even if you dye it with permanent you probably wont get the color you want...it will most likely just make your hair have a reddish tint in the light since your hair is so dark. The only way to really get it bright is to bleach your hair to a light blonde...then dye it.

Red won't show on dark hair. I asked professionals about it once when I wanted my hair to be red (I have dark hair as well). You have to bleach your hair for the red to show, otherwise all you will get is a barely visible red tint that fades quickly. It sucks, but bleaching it first is the only way to get the color you want to come out properly.

Re: Dyeing My Hair
bleaching it is the only way. i have dark brown hair and i wanted to dye it black then add pink streaks. so i dyed it black then bleached that seperate strands. Then dyed those pink. Its not hard at all. just dont' do it alone. or you'll mess up your hair like my sister did. But its much better to get it done professionally, so i advise that.

Zarie: the hairdressers you talk to suck. I have dark hair and I dyed it red. It came out like a rust. It was tight. I loved it. Leave the dye in longer but don't go over the max time limit. It'll fry your hair.

My hair is dark as well, and I have used a bright red shade of Garnier in my hair. I left it in my hair overnight when I washed it out... nothing. Barely even a tint. Also, my hair didn't fry from leaving the dye in my hair past the maximum time limit. I guess not everyone has this totally awesome dark hair of yours that turns into a rust color, pynk.

Re: Dyeing My Hair
hey if die doesnt work you can try your other option.... wigs. this ism y latest one haha - i like my hair and i dont want to cut, style or die it in case i dont like it - so im starting to use wigs. also a plus for me because my hair grows too fast for die i have to die it like one a month - so im gonna start using wigs instead besides then i can have different hair every day - just get a wig cap to make sure your natural hair stays tucked up. good luck -Katie

Re: Dyeing My Hair
I guess it depends on the hair. I've dyed my hair 6 times and my hair hasn't started frying. I also have a friend (he's a rock musician who dyes his hair a new funky color like once every month) whose dyed his hair 11 (or more) times and his hair is fine. It isn't fried. So I guess it all depends. Some peoples' hair are not as sensitive as others.

Re: Dyeing My Hair
If I were you I'd definitely use semi-permanent in case you end up hating it... if you like it, and are willing to keep up with re-dying it, then get permanent.
I dye my hair a really dark brown with semi-permanent color every month (when it fades) so that I don't have to deal with growing out the color if I change my mind.

Re: Dyeing My Hair
well your hair will get more fried if you use blonds, mostly. but it will eventuall, and you can always grow it out. i did. I have been dying my hair since 6th grade, and in 7th i died it purple and when i decided to change i had to die it blond like 8 times, so yeah it fried it but then i let my hair grow(it was kinda short then) and got my hair cut shoulder lenght and it is healthy and nice.
