Music Files License

Post by StressedOut »

Ok,so in the summer of 2003 i bought 4 songs of BuyMusic.com, and a couple of months ago I got a free song from a Burger King Promotion. I was able to play these song yesterday. Today I try to play them with Windows Media Player and it says all the licenses for the songs have expired, so they won't play. This doesn't seem right considering the songs came from two different sources. What do I do?

Update:

My AOL's been slow all day and I'm getting this message at startup: "The executable files in Port Magic are corrupt, please re-install." I think this is related to the music thing. I think I have a virus or something. Somebody please help!

Hm... Windows Media Player is a piece....

Try something for me... Go to http://www.winamp.com

Down the free Winamp player and try to play the files. If it doesn't work, lemme know.

Ok, i'll give my 2 cents.

those songs, delete them and find better copies of them in something a little better than whatever format they were in (assuming windows media player wmv files.....) go download the mp3 version or what not

I really have no advice, i'm not familiar with your problem at all, so this is my advice.

ok, but is seems odd that all the licenses would expire on the same day

and that port magic thing could have something to do with it

Ummm....

Go download a music downloader and download the songs. That's strange. And scan your computer for spyware.

Firstly, I know more about computers on this site than mostly everybody here. There is like, 3 people here who know more than me or as much as I do. While I take real offense to that, I'll go ahead and let it slide...

First off, download WinAmp because WinAmp is free and is one of the best/elite multi-media players around. Windows Media Player is the shittiest creation by Microsoft I've seen thus far.

Secondly, something I haven't seen answered although I probably missed it, when you purchased these songs, what format were they in? WMV or MP3 or some other? Not too long ago, after the RIAA and MIAA became real bothersome, they started encoding these files with a... whats the word Im looking for... license that expires and protection from piracy which basically means either the song will only play for a limited time or will not function on any other computer. With some music, Windows Media Player does it automatically to any music file that supports it which fights against piracy (which is why I disown that program, well one of the reasons).

It seems you are rather legit when you get your music because you purchased it which is something I won't do. I download it & if I like it - I go out and buy the CD and copy it to my computer. I wouldn't pay 0.99 for any song online because it's a rip-off when I can get it for free without fear of the RIAA. If I know what songs you can't get working, I can in fact get you working copies easily enough. I don't recommend buying songs online through software like Napster and whatnot because they encode their files to protect against piracy. Ditch WMP because it also screws these music files up. ;)

one thing after awhile winamp sucks. i have limewire pro. i pay 50 dollers a year for all the songs i want and ive never had a problems. That burger king promation did that shit where the licenses expire. ad-aware dosnt scan deep into your harddrive. you need a program that does. try spybot or go to pcworld.com and look at the download secton. it has a ton of free tools that are better then ad-aware.

id have to disagree. even tho i use winamp for 100% of the music and online radio i listen to, i still have respect for windows media player. windows media player 7 and 8 were terrible. but they have improved so much and windows media player 9 and 10 are honestly great. if i didnt use winamp, i would definitely use them. too many people jump on the i hate microsoft bandwagon, it annoys the hell outta me. i can think of alot more software microsoft has created that is worse then wmp, windows ME anyone?

your right about resource hog, but on my athlon64 3200+ with 1024mb of ram i dont notice it at all... actually now that i think about it, i dont even have it installed anymore. i just formated a couple weeks ago. i dont know anything about how it rips cds, i would NEVER think about using windows media player(or winamp) to rip tracks off cds.

just thinking about windows me makes me quiver.

using limewire to play music is definitely the worst resource hog.
