Mayerthorpe

Post by ToraToraTora »

Sorry for the late post, but this is an interesting topic for discussion. Well, at least it is a tragedy.

On Thursday, a group of Royal Canadian Mounted Polce Officers were called to conduct a drug raid on a farm close to Mayerthorpe, Alberta, a small town outside of where I currently live. When they arrived, they were ambushed, and four members were killed. This marks the largest number of mounties killed in a firefight since the Riel Rebellion of 1885.

Well, is it really a bad thing that our culture can actually call 4 deaths a massacre? This still has been the largest shooting in canada of police officers in a over 100 years. It's just out of the ordinary...no one kills mounties.

Well, still, taking such little firepower and taking so few men - can we all say "suicide mission"?

Well, not really. You see, 4 officers SHOULD be able, in normal circutances, be ale to conduct a drug raid when no one is home. However, they had bad intel, and paid for it. Also, normally, we don't exactly have a hugely violent culture. Sure, like everyone has a gun. Especially in western canada, where everyone has multiple guns. We have on of the higher rates of gun ownerships in industrialized countries, but one of the lowest comparitive violent crime rates. Things like this really aren't common.

Anyways, I was there in Edmonton for the service. I didn't go to it, but i live across the street from the Universiade Pavillion (the butterdome) where the service was held and it was insane. There was about 6000 officers from across north america marching, the butterdome itself was packed with about 10000 people including dignitaries, and about 10000 more general public that attended in the gyms attached to the building. The governor generala and PM were there, and i was passed by the PMs motorcade. It was incredible. People were lined up all along the street even if they werent attending. The construction cranes were moved so that they hung canadian flags over the middle of the street. It was just an incredible display of Canadiana.
