Disc Drive Not Reading Disc...

Post by Spitfire » Sat Mar 26, 2005 4:15 pm

Ok. Im asking this on behalf of a relative.

Well, her DVD drive wont read disc. It was working yesterday, but today, it shows as no disk being inside the drive. Its just a little over 3 years old, as was working perfectly fine up until this point.

Any ideas?

Have they tried restarting? Three years is not that long for an optical drive. What OS? How frequently do they use it? Do they abuse it by kicking at it? I mean there are a lot of causes for things and I mean "it broke" really is not going to help us understand to where we might be able to help. Are they putting the DVD in the right way and not upside down? Believe me, it's happened to even me so don't get offended.

Ok.

I dont know what OD means, and I dont know the frequency, but I do know that is used frequently, but not excesivly, not abused, and the cd's are in the right way. And yes, they have also tried restarting their computer. The drive just doesnt read any disc as being in the drive. If you go to the drive and properties, it tells you to insert a disk. Maybe thats a lil more info to help.

Maybe the disc just needs cleaning? Sometimes, we get the same notice, and we just clean it and sometimes it works straight away :) There is'nt any scratches on the disc is there? That could also say there is no disc in the drive.

OS: Operating System

Try running a CD drive cleaner through it. Then, try putting a good/clean disk in and see if it reads it. What kind of drive is it?

Sometimes going directly into the computer and removing the cables from the DVD drive and putting them back in the same way works, sometimes the master cable may have wiggled loose out of place
