Tattoo's.
I am considering getting a tattoo. Not really to rebel or anything like that, just because I like the idea and enjoy the one I have come up with. I am going to college this Fall to be an Art major. And I have always been doing art. So I am thinking of getting a tattoo of the japanese symbol for Artist. I would want it behind my ear so that I can hide it in my hair (I have quite long hair) so that it will not disallow me to take certain jobs or to have people see a large tattoo on my upper arm or something and get an asumption about my character. I realize it wont really be visable to anyone but me but I enjoy that fact. It will be like my dirty little secret.
Does anyone have any downsides to gettng a tattoo other than the fact that you might not like it later in life? I think I've thought that one into the ground. Or any other suggestions on what/where to get it? Thanks so much.

Re: Tattoo's.
Whoa. I enjoy all forms of expression, including tattoos. However, BEHIND YOUR EAR? Do you realize how much that's going to hurt? Heh.
I'd say you definitely should get it. Especially if it's going to be of something that MEANS something to you. I really have no respect for anyone that gets tattoos just to "look cool". The only thing I think you should think about, is another place to locate it. Not behind your ear. That's going to hurt. You could maybe get it like on your hip bone? Somewhere that's always covered.
If you choose to get it behind your ear though, whoa. You've got some courage. Heh.
Good luck.

Thanks for your comment! And I understand your concern about pain. I had thought of that and I desided with something like this, no pain, no game. lol. So Im just going to load up on advil and take it. Its not a terribly large tattoo so I think I'll be able to take the pain since I will be aware its coming.

i like that you're not getting one in a very obvious place just to show it off. although I CAN'T STAND japanese/chinese symbols because absolutely everyone has one- if you want it then get it!
i have a large tattoo on my lower back, a staff with a treble clef and a some pretty design and the first four notes to "imagine" by john lennon. i like it a lot because it's fairly well hidden unless it's the summer or something. as soon as i'm 18 (this june) i want another on my left forearm. but i don't know. i think tattoos are attractive AND classy if drawn well and in darker ink.

Agreed.
I'm getting a tattoo on the back of my neck this summer. It'll be well hidden unless I have my hair up. I want like, a deep existentialist phrase in latin. Anyways, I think they can look good if drawn in darkly. When I'm older, I want to tattoo of a deep red maple leaf on my inner hip. I think that's really sexy.
Anyways, good luck.
Cheers,
Jenna

Yeah I see what your saying about the japanese symbol, but I have a personally history with Japan, so for me its a personal thing to add to it, and not just something trendy. I'd rather it not be trendy, but what am I gonna do? Maybe it will go out of style soon.

Re: Tattoo's.
You'll probably have to shave that part of your head to allow them to get the tatoo in. Also, like someone said, it will hurt like a bitch because there is NO tissue between your skin and your skull. But all the more luck to you. I know what I want my tatoo to be (a green boatman's wheel) because it's the symbol for the Great River Road and since I've biked the length of the Mississippi..... It's definately personal to me. Depending on how much I hike of it, I might get the AT for Appalatian (I mangled that word) Trail on the back of my calf. My one deal with the boatsman's wheel is I can't decide where I want it. It's either on the inside of my ankle or my hip.

Re: Tattoo's.
okay i got a tattoo on my spine. dead center on my spine. and it didnt hurt. i got it right where my spine sticks out a little. i didnt hurt one bit. I love my tattoo and am considering getting another one. preferably one i can hide from my mother .... but i may not get it for a while tho. so who knows. but i know for sure, that by the time i am 30 i will have a lot of tattoo's they are not a bad thing and they are not all rebelish. just dont go flashing them to everyone if you dont want to. to me my tattoo is very private, and i got it, for a reason, and it is intended to be private. so meh, also keep in mind that tattoo's can be for show too. so if you get it anywhere where people may see, you may get funny looks and stuff, and it may affect your chances for getting a job. there a positves and negatives to tattoo's. also consider what society accepts as the norm now, will change down the road and that may mean that tattoos will not be as kool, or as accepted as they are now...
