J. D. Salinger

Post by kellykelly »

I just finished reading J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye" and "Franny and Zooey" and I really enjoyed both books, I was wondering if anyone knew of any other writers tht write in a style similar to Salinger or any other writers I might like. Thank ya!

well have you read "The Outsiders"? i also loved "Catcher in the Rye", it was great! i think that "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton is kinda like Catcher, and also "A Separate Peace" by John Knowles, i think. but all 3 books focus on teens who are kinda in an akward spot in their lives...my favorite would be "A Separate Peace" idk, but all of em made me laugh out loud and cry. so, tell me if youre gonna try em and if you do tell me if you like em!! :D

Ugh. I hated A Seperate Peace. We had to read it in 9th grade. The Outsiders was good. Catcher in the Rye was pretty good too, though I didn't completely finish it before it was due back. A book that reminds me of that style for some reason is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I LOVED that book.

That is real life. That was based on Sylvia Platt's life. Then she commited suicide.

I liked her poetry so I read The Bell Jar to get more insight into her work. I'm neutral. It didn't exactly move me but I didn't get annoyed by her character either. I don't think it's similar to The Catcher in the Rye though. With Holden Caulfield you need to look past what he says to understand him, whereas the woman in The Bell Jar (can't remember her name) seems much more open and honest with herself. That's how I remember it, at least.

I'm one of the only people on the planet who hasn't read Catcher in the Rye.

I'm more of a Stephen King psychological thriller type personally. People loosing it, commiting acts of murder... you know, that kind of stuff.
