U.S. Asks EU, NATO for Hurricane Aid

16 European Nations Pledge Assistance to America

BRUSSELS, Belgium (Sept. 4) - The United States has asked the European Union and NATO for emergency assistance, requesting blankets, first aid kits, water trucks and food for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the two organizations said Sunday.

EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said the 25-nation bloc was "ready to contribute to the U.S. efforts aimed at alleviating the humanitarian crisis" in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama -- the states hardest hit by Katrina.

The 26-nation NATO alliance said it too had received a request for aid from Washington. The United States has asked for NATO relief support in the form of food rations for the thousands of people evacuated from New Orleans and other areas, the alliance said in a statement.

It added that a liaison officer was being dispatched to Washington to work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

"NATO stands ready to continue to support the United States as it recovers from this natural disaster," the alliance said.

NATO's Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Center was coordinating the alliance's pledges to the American request.

The European Commission said its aid coordination office would manage the aid from European countries and already has drafted a preliminary list of materials, team and equipment being pledged by EU member states.

It said U.S. authorities had requested 500,000 prepared meals, thousands of blankets, first aid kits and several water trucks to provide clean drinking water.

So far, Austria, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Finland, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Spain and The Netherlands have pledged aid.

"Specialist teams from several member states are on standby and ready for immediate deployment," the Commission said in a statement.

It is a sad day when the richest nation on Earth asks for help.

I just think it's sad that we're asking for help from nations (such as France) that we were badmouthing two years ago.

Personally,

I think that asking for others to help us is a good thing and a step in the right direction for our current administration.

We may be the top country in some aspects, but this is an International commnity, like yoaliens3000 noted, we live in today, asking for others to help is not a bad thing, just as we helped India etc with the Tsunami, India is what the second largest country in the World.....

I think giving and asking for help is a sign of respect between nations in the International community. Whatever it is, its certainly not pathetic.

I agree with yoaliens. If we ourselves were to put forth all the effort by ourselves it could/would quite possibly completely ruin us. Notice that they aren't asking for money. They are asking for items that are desperately needed. For example, blankets. We could pull every blanket off of every shelf off of every store in the country, and that still may not be enough and it'd create a backorder on blankets that wouldn't be sufficently fulfilled for years. And since when is asking for help a bad thing? I personally think that being able to ask for help can be one of the noblest things a person can do.

About the France thing you mentioned...... the situations are completely different. We were (well I always badmouth the French for any and every reason) "badmouthing" the French for not having the same political opinion as we did. Now however, for a humanitarian cause in the wake of a natural disaster, there's nothing wrong with asking for help from people we disagree with. For a rather crude example..... I frequently disagree with yoaliens. But that certainly wouldn't prevent me for asking for his help if I were laying on the side of the road wounded with my arms torn off.

I don't think it's to say that we can't provide these things, so much as no one prepared well enough in advance for the provisions. Our recovery efforts weren't well enough conceived and asking for aid from other countries isn't such a bad thing. Especially when they are ready and willing to give. It may be hard to believe, but many people don't feel as generous to give within our own country because they don't feel affected whether they are too far away or just don't have any direct interest. There's no shame in saying "hey, we need a little help."

We could, but if we provided everything ourselves it could quite possibly ruin the economy. So then we'd be the poorest nation on earth, and be the laughingstock of the world, but at least we can say that we did it on our own. Look how proud that makes us.
