Home Wireless Networking... A Quickie.

Post by The Black Hat »

I am re-configuring my home wireless network & actually I am slightly confused. I've read the help files already. Ok basically, I need to know... when I access my wireless router and see the set up screen, it shows me the MAC address (LAN IP Address).

Device IP Address: 192.168.xxx.xxx

Subnet Mask: 255.255.xxx.xxx

The help files says:

This is the IP Address and Subnet Mask of the router as it is seen by internal LAN users in your home or office. The default value is 192.168.1.1 for IP and 255.255.255.0 for Subnet Mask.[/b]

Can I safely change these to whatever I want? Thoughts?
Respectfully,

Yes you can, however be sure you are on the same network (ie, if you change it to 10.10.10.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 then make sure your local computer that you will be accessing it on is in the same branch of the network - 10.10.1.50 / 255.255.0.0 for example)

otherwise, you wont be able to access the router.

Don't forget to change it's DHCP Lease settings.

I can't think of a better use of server resources... I really can't.
