Acer Laptops?

Post by InnocenceLost57 »

So I need to get a laptop pretty soon, and Dells are pretty much crap - someone recommended me getting an Acer, but I have my doubts about those as well. Are there any specific types of laptop that are higher quality or don't commit suicide as often? Anyone have any acer computers, and do you like them or not?

Thanks

Theres nothing wrong with Acer, the company i work for has several, and they all run very nicely. You havent really given a budget, which is essential in telling you which laptop is "Best in its class" if you will.

If you're going high end all the way, Alienware, or Dell's XPS laptops are very nice.

Normal computers, I'd say Acer's a good brand, and for as much as people say about Dells being shit.. they're only shitty if you're talking to tech support, really. If you're fairly tech-savvy, and dont call Tech Support that often.. then Dell is a path to consider.

Also, if you dont have a problem using Macs, there are laptops at reasonable prices from http://www.apple.com :)

And if you get a Mac then good on you :P they are really nice machines and run like a dream. Just a bit harder to get used to if your really used to Windows.

Honestly - I disagree with you on that point. I think it's easier for a new user to get used to the Mac vs. Windows XP. :boxing:

Thanks guys. That helps a lot, we haven't really decided on a price range yet but are just lookin around.

Are compaqs/hp's really that great? I've had one and my teacher has one and they were both crap. That could just be our experiences though.

all my corporate laptops are HP Compaq's... all the ones I buy are HPs. I love their support. I've had 2 hard drive failures on a server within 1 week of each other, and they were on slots 2 and 3 of a 6 Hard drive server. the next day I had a replacement hard drive couriered to me that arived before 10AM.

I also have IBM Servers and one of the IBM hard drives failed in a 5 Hard drive system, I called IBM and was routed to their US callcenter and after 2 hours on the phone with them, got it all organized, then they shipped the hard drive to the wrong location, and it arrived the next day but after 3PM and they promised it was going to be there before 10 AM.

See, it would be the whole failing thing that I'm worried about. I'm looking for something that would have the least amount of problems possible.

However, if that just really isn't feasible, then I'd settle for good tech support.

I love my Apple Powerbook. I've heard mostly good things about the MacBook and MacBook Pro lines, though they are a lot of brand new stuff, so if I were you and going to pursue the Apple route, I'd wait about 6 months or so to let them work out the rest of the kinks, because I have heard of a nightmare or two, which honestly is to be expected of any brand new product.

I've had about 6 or 7 laptops...

my order of pref is:

the ferrari laptop, it actually works AMAZINGLY well, but it is rather expensive

then sony

then toshiba.

then hp

I would never buy a dell, or a gateway, or any of those types, and I have never heard anything good about an acer, but on the other hand I have never heard anything bad.

I know! Luckily, my powerbook is pre intel. However, I've heard that being able to run both OSes is nice. But why you'd want to run Windows on a Mac, or Windows at all, is beyond me.

I have a pre-intel iBook, OSX Tiger on it, and that really is the best OS i've ever used. It does dual boot to Ubuntu Linux, just for when i need something in there.

But Winblows on a Mac? Thats straight up perversion. :P
