Cingular is a division of AT&T, they were using the name Cingular publicly for a while, obviously did not go how they wanted it to, went back to AT&T.

Cingular Wireless was created by Bellsouth Mobility and AT&T wireless (along with a few small co.s) joining together and naming themselves Cingular.



SBC Communications bought out AT&T a few months ago, changed their name to AT&T.



Then the new AT&T (SBC and AT&T) recently purchased BellSouth (local/long distance phone company to areas of southern USA), which means that AT&T now owns all of Cingular, and they decided to change the name.
