Windows Vista
Some short and to the point advice: Do not buy or run it.
- Slower then XP.
- it treats the end user like he or she is retarded.
- you have to coddle it more then a 2 day old infant.
GUI rips off mac, etc.

Re: Windows Vista
Friend,
Thanks for that! I got my dad a new laptop recently, and it has XP thank goodness! but it came with a free upgrade option or what not, and I told him not to do it. You just reinforced my thoughts on it.

Re: Windows Vista
Hi Nj!!
I hope you're OK.
Thanks for the info. My PC is getting slower and slower every day and I've been seriously considering buying a new one. But my 'gut' tells me [and now YOU] that it's too early to buy 'Vista'. I downloaded IE7 onto my XP based PC a few months ago and a few days later I went back to IE6. [I hope I'm saying that right] The reason I didn't like IE7 is because it 'checked' every single page I looked at [for viruses, spy-ware, etc., - I'm assuming] and REALLY slowed things down. This sounds like what 'Vista' does. And that being the case - I don't want it!! Trouble is - most new PC's come with 'Vista' now. I've only seen on with XP. Maybe I should run out and buy it - FAST!!
Have a great day.
GREAT BIG HUG
Craig!!

Re: Windows Vista
I am running Vista Ultimate. I also have Office 2007 installed. My system runs fine. My Vista experience level is 2.1 due to my RAM being old pc2700 (slow, DDR1 RAM)
Vista is supposed to take advantage of NEW hardware, but will work fine on an older computer, just not with the AERO interface. If you run AERO, you need a powerful machine with a powerful graphics card and a lot of RAM, otherwise it slows your computer down.

I just got a brand new laptop and it has Vista. It's ok, but I don't like the Mac features. Plus I hear it has a lot of security holes in it.

Re: Windows Vista
I personally never recommend buying the newest version of Windows so close to the release date. The countless bugs and glitches are annoying and quite disappointing. Remember when XP just came out it was a step away from being a disaster.
Wait a few months, or even a year before upgrading to Windows Vista.
Ofcourse there is always someone who will be lucky and have it run smoothly first shot(goddamn you!!! *jealous*). But that's never happened to me... I guess that's partly the reason I'm so cynical about Microsoft

Re: Windows Vista
Forget about Vista. It's a crappy dumbed down version of Mac OS X. In good news though, OS X Leopard is coming soon!

Re: Windows Vista
Considering my line of work, I need to work with vista, even if it's buggy and such. I have not found any bugs in it yet, and I even forced it to use a video driver that wasn't compatible and made it blue screen!!! w00t. Anyways, yea, it's quite nice, but it is a rip of a few items in MAC.... but then again, no one really comes up with anything new these days, it's all taken from other programs to make it equivalent - ie, look at MSN Live Messenger and it's OFFLINE messages - rip from ICQ days.
From the server front, Active Directory is a rip of Novell's system, which in turn a rip from an IBM Mainframe system.
Everything is just improved upon...

Re: Windows Vista
yea we wont be getting it for a bit. My dad is one of the computer techno dudes for Agricore United. So since Agricore has a ton of windows XP left over, and a ton of good PC's left over, i got a computer that was almost new (my dad got a brand new dell for us cuz it was left over) for free, as well as free windows XP... why change if its free?

Re: Windows Vista
I'm running Vista Biz here on 2GB of RAM. It seems fine.
.... and then the post was through.

Re: Windows Vista
I'm running Vista via Parallels on my Macbook Pro, and so far... I dont use it very much at all. I use it to open Steam and CounterStrike: Source, just because i dont have a way to open them in Mac.
Anyway, from the looks of it, everything that's New and Exciting in Vista is a ripoff.
Widgets! ...OSX has them.
Multiple Desktops! ...Linux has it.
Tabbed web browsing in IE! ...Firefox has had that since 1999.
Scroll through open apps! ...OSX has it.
It combines everything that people like in other operating systems, makes it worse, and then throws it into one big, security flawed mess.
We're going to have a Vista box set up at a CTF i'm going to, and its anticipated as the easiest box to hack into.
Keep your shit, Microsoft... LEOPARD!

Re: Windows Vista
I have a 24" iMac here, so yea, big Mac fan.
I've sat behind my sister's new computer, which runs Vista. It seems very eye-candy'ish and some things are a blatant copy from OS X like features. It doesn't run slow though, as you mentioned. It's still quite customizable. All those extra safety measures you talked about are merely optional (though recommendable and they hardly make your system run slower if it's high-end -- which isn't something you can whine about seeing it's also a brand new OS).
I'm still a big fan of XP though. I have it on a separate partition and sometimes boot into it (though most of the times I just run it simultaneously under OS X -- which makes it less functional gaming wise, but other than that it runs perfect). Office 2007 is awesome on a 24" btw, I love it =D
