Adopt-a-friend

Post by Sam! »

Hey guys, I just had a thought. What if HT had some kind of program where you could volunteer to sign up to help out a specific person. Kind of like the big-brother/little-brother thing, but it's with someone your own age. You could volunteer to mentor them and be a friend. We could call it the Adopt-a-Friend program. I think that would be kind of cool, and I'd love to help someone out, or even be helped.

I'm thinking there would be like a penpal kind of setup so we could monitor everything. Maybe it could just be through PM and if something goes wrong or there is a complaint, it can be easily monitored. We'd match people up and they can help each other by just giving a shoulder or a hand. We'd have to require that the mentors are here a lot though so they can help their friends.

I think IM's would be the best route to go if something like this was implemented. I dont feel that those things should be monitored. That kind turns me off the whole thing. I also don't like the idea of 'You guys matching people up".. I think it would be up to us to 'Match'. ya know?

The idea is you say "I want to help a kid who is struggling in school." or "I want to help a kid who is having social problems."

I think it SHOULD be monitored because otherwise bad things can happen, and if it's an official site program we need to offer an option on site.

Um, in some ways thats already happening, though not being matched to one specific person. Like some people may pm somebody they know on the site or a mod who specialises in that particular topic. But yeah, its kinda a cool idea.

I really think that's a good idea.

Sometimes people are a little afraid to you know... say PM someone or IM someone for help... and it just might be just a small portion on the site... we could maybe have a few people and have little lists beneath them saying what they think they're best a helping with, a little about themselves, something to "get to know" them. Maybe people who would want these "big brother/big sister" type people could read the bios or something and see which one they feel could help them best..

I don't know... I think it's a cute idea, though.

It's called HelpLink.

You select the topic that your problem fits under and it's sent to numerous people who have also checked that they can help with that area.

I think this idea is a big waste of resources when we have HelpLink.
I'm under no illusion

As to what I meant to you

It does sound kind of cool. Yet, I still do not understand why this would be needed? Because there is the Support Groups, HelpNET and the chat..so aren't those ways teens/humans could get acquainted with another person? You do become friends with people off those things, sometimes..even usually. Nice idea, but it seems rather unnessesary.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
