It can - it's not always only on your first time that it hurts. If you're not fully prepared or stretched, or if he's bigger than you're used to - it depends on a lot of factors that can all lead to sex hurting if something's not right. Has sex always hurt, or is this a new thing that's going on?

It may just be that you are very small or slimly built, and that you haven't been prepared properly for actual penetration. Some girls are built smaller than others, and while the vagina can stretch, it definitely hurts when you're not as ready. Do you generally take time with foreplay, or just go straight to intercourse?

Also, note that some sexual diseases can also cause pain. It depends one the type of pain you have. A possible irritation or burning sensation type of pain may signal the need of Medical Attention. If it's something related to your built, there's nothing to worry.

It happens...

After I gave birth to my son last year sex was constantly painful during the first 15 minutes...

Finally ended up buying a "toy" and using that before sex... It helped a LOT! lol.

So maybe see a doctor first to get checked for stds and other problems that could be going on... if everything comes back good then invest in a nice shiny new toy.

Amy said what I was going to add, mostly- if you are experiencing sharp pains or any type of burning or discomfort you are worried about, do not be afraid to ask your doctor. If you are sexually active, you should be having pap smears regularly, and also if you go to the doctor regularly hopefully you are comfortable asking them about things that concern you. If you do not have any medical concern, then just try more foreplay and make sure this is something you are comfortable with. Stress/anxiety about sex can cause you to tense up, and that can cause discomfort also.

It's important to be fully prepared for it. You need to be calm and relaxed and take your time getting turned on. As long as he is gentle and takes it slow at first, you can usually accommodate. It will probably be painful at first, but you should get used to it. If you don't, however, don't think you're alone... There's actually several people who have such intense pain when trying to have sex that they literally cannot do it. Like someone else said, maybe you should buy a toy. It's a good way to get yourself used to something foreign that your body is not used to yet.
