Discussion: Animal testing.

Post by nirvana »

I bring up the age old debate of animal testing, as I am going into the pharmaceutical career [hopefully]. I find myself in a delicate situation, I've always seen testing on animals for a cosmetic purpose absolutely wrong, but for medicinal, I'm torn. I think that sacrificing animals for our needs wrong, yet the work that is going on would not be the same. We would not have made as many advances as we have done in medicine if it was not for animal testing.

I think my view stands that for medical research animal testing is deemed necessary, though I doubt I could ever do it myself.

As a HUGE animal lover and working toward an animal behavioral degree, It's surprising to say but as much as I hate it, I'm ok with animals being used for medical purposes As long as the animal were bred for animal research and did NOT come from from an animal broker.

In Michigan it is legal for an animal broker to pick up stray, cheap pets from websites or newspapers, or animals that will be put down and sell them for medical research.

I think it depends on which medicine. Like if its for cancer research than I'd admit that animal testing is absolutely neccessary.

However, if its for something like a cold medicine then I think its terribly cruel because:

1. there are already so many other brands

2. we should suck it up and deal with it

3. we take millions of lives to avoid a week of sniffles

4. the cold isn't going to go away just because we dispose of 100 little innocent guinea pigs

5. people need to learn that feeling shitty is a part of life sometimes.

thats just how I see it.

Like everyone else has stated, this is a hard decision to make. I can understand under some circumstances, animal testing is necessary in terms up coming up with better medicine for serious problems. Yet, besides using animals for testing for major medicines, they are being testing consecutively for less important drugs. Although animals are unable to voice how they feel about this issue, I am sure if they could they would not stand for it. Humans aren't up for being testing consecutively because they object to go through it. I don't want to sound like a hippie or crazy animal lover, but... I think what it comes down to is we believe animals seemingly feel less than us and therefore, they are more deserving to be tested. In an ideal world, humans would be tested for necessary research on drugs. They would be able to provide more vital information for drug research since they are able to be vocal and actually enable the researcher to feelings. That is my two cents! or four. <img src='http://www.helpingteens.org/groups/publ ... /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
