Tell Someone To JUMP

Hi Everyone!!



A week ago today - in my city - Victoria BC, Canada - some poor soul decided to end his life by climbling up to the top [or at least near the top] of the Johnson Street Bridge. Someone called the police. Soon after - a crowd gathered. It is estimated that upwards of 200 people were watching the 'event'. [the bridge is very near the Victoria Harbour - a VERY popular place with tourists, etc.] In the words of one of the police officers who was at the scene, ".....as time dragged on, some would-be bridge-users pointed to their watches, huffed and puffed about having hotels to get to or pizzas to pick up, and muttered about the inconvenience of it all. Bad enough, but it was the behaviour of others in the crowd that was truly appalling. Some of those watching yelled at the man on the bridge - encouraging him to jump. Some were even heard to say [and more than loud enough for the man to hear] "jump - jump - jump you chickenshit!!"" The officer goes on to say, "The police had had enough. When some bozo got very close the distraught man and urged the guy to go [as in 'jump'] the cops moved in. The guy tried to run, but wasn't fast enough. He was led away in handcuffs, much to the consternation [disapproval] of a group at the other end of the bridge, who howled their displeasure. [in other words - some of the people on that bridge thought it was OK to encourage a person to kill themselves and that the police had no 'right' to arrest anyone for saying anything]



This whole thing makes me sick to my stomach. But it's not the first time it's happened. The same thing happened in New Westminster - the city I lived in before I moved to Victoria. Chances are - it's happened hundreds of times before.



Now you know what I think about people who do such a thing - what do YOU think?? How did you answer the poll question??



Just so you know - 2 hours after the police first got the 'call' - the man was escorted off the bridge and is - thank goodness - still alive.

i wouldnt ever encourage some1 to jump. but i also dont think ppl should b arrested b/c they did say for him to jump. watever happened to freedom of speech. The police should have warned those ppl to not do that or else theyd b in trouble, but u cant jus arrest some1 out of nowhere. The person has their own decision on wether to jump or not, its not the peoples fault if they told him to do it.

i would never encourage anyone to kill themselves...unless i hated beyond hatred....like..if they had tried to kill me...or sexualy abused me or something along those lines...and they wanted to kill themselves..i might let them..but probably not....i would call the cops most likely

if u think about it, part of the reason someone jumps off a bridge, infront of a crowd so that people are like NO dont do it! just so he can do it and leave a little saddness in people because of his/her bad life or whatever. If no one said No dont do it and instead everyone said JUMP JUMP JUMP - then it might have the opposite effect!

yeah, i'm with you. if i were to jump from a bridge and i heard a crowd yellin at me to jump i would just get so damn angry and stay alive just to go down the bridge and kill them!!! muahaha, from suicidal to homicidal! (sorry, i'm twisted...)

This thread demonstrates why people suck. Telling someone to jump is beyond harsh, in all honesty it's something I'd never do.



But then, the person who threatens to jump and then doesn't is a conviction-lacking attention-seeker, and they also suck.



In conclusion: people suck.

I wouldn't tell somebody to jump, but I also wouldn't stand around waiting for them to get off the bridge either. I can't tell somebody why life should be worth living if theirs really isn't.

I put maybe b/c I agree with sk8r_4_life but at the same time if the person did jump, I would feel responcible.

I would NEVER encourage someone to commit suicide I would be the one begging him to get off.

In Canada - at least - it is not only illegal to help someone commit suicide but it's also illegal to encourage someone to commit suicide. Therefore - anyone who tells someone to 'jump' is breaking the law. As far as I am concerned - a person who yells 'jump' should be [if someone DOES jump] be charged with 2nd or 3rd murder.
