Recognition Of Members

Post by Gandalf » Wed Feb 12, 2003 2:42 pm

Many users need recognition on this site. The way that it is done at the moment is to just make them a mod or super mod, but how is that giving them recognition? Many of these people want to give advice, rather than do administrative duties on the site. Isabel or Barelyhanginon for example are two good examples of this.

Maybe we should start giving out awards, displayed in the persons name. I know we have the bar things indicating the number of posts, but this doesn't necessarily mean they are giving good advice. I think a more personal thankyou is needed, that the admins would give out to the very best users. We could do a list of the best users as they recieve this and it would be good motivation to get people to help looking at it from the other side.

Awsome Awsome Awsome idea!!!

Recognition is a wonderful thing and alot of users here deserve it, also the number of post doesn't really mean anything, because 30 post of good advice is better than 500 post of bad advice or no advice at all :-)

This idea would also break down the boudaries of having admins, supmods, mods. Every user would be more equal. What I wouldn't like to happen is the admins abuse their power and give themsevls stars or whatever other system, just because they can.

So are we doing this thing then? If so, how will it work, what will we give to them? An award in the persons name. Someone will have to design this and integrate it into the boards. If we are going to do this then im glad, finally this forum has had a purpose.

[EDIT]

I dont like the poster of the week/month etc, it means there is always someone who is voted the best, even if no one is particularly good. Only use the system if we realise there is a user who has done something good for the site.

I have a few ideas u know where top poster and thread starter are ? the admins can put somthing else that says member of the week, mod of the week supoermod of the week and I guess they can put a poll in general to see (fair votes) like admins can choose 4 top posting helpful members , &mods... and when the results come out u post them on the thingy

I agree. Just because someone has made 600 posts does not mean they are god. they are just either flooding the topics or just yacky. (I know there are the good posters too that have that many!) But it does kinda tick me off. And can i be suicide mod again? hehe

I think we should have monthly recognitions because weekly and daily are too often and there is too much on this site to look at to determine these things.

I think we should have:

"Best advice giver"

"Most polite"

"Most caring and friendly"

"Most active" (not meaning who has the most posts!)

We could add more as we come up with them.

I think a weekly poll would be a good idea, but keep the votes private. Don't let people see them.

Or here's another idea... have the admins pick out like 10 or so people every week, and then have questions like "Who has given the best advice" out of those 10... but that would be kind of competitiony.

I don't think it's feasible to have everyone nomintated every week though. Probably like 10 per week.... like an honorable mention, and then "Member of the Week" is one of those 10.

I'm not sure if this would be too much work or not, but perhaps you could have a form that looks something like this.

Please choose who you think has made the most impact on the board?

__Sk8er_4_Life

__Superman's Sexy Princess

__Nuchaku Steve

__DLtweeds

__She

__Sky

__Gandalf

Please provide also a reason why you feel this person should be the Member of the Week:

Then have the forms sent in and the votes tallied. Then each week, post in General the person of the week and some of the responses to the questions. Leave the names off though. Like...

This week's member of the week is....

DLTWEEDS!

"DLtweeds is so cool. He gives great advice and has never been afraid to post a controversial opinion."

"Even though I disagree with him a lot, I respect DLtweeds for his views and opinions"

That way we could know some reasons why and have a chance to anonymously praise the people we like.

Once a person has been member of the week, they can't be it again. The names for who is on the ballot can be randomly chosen from the member's list, or the admins, mods, and supermods could nominate? The ballot candidates can be recycled though. So Sky wasn't member of the week on this ballot, but she can be on the next one. Do bi-weekly though, or monthly, because that way it will be something more special.

Those are my thoughts on how to go about doing the member of the week.

I still think weekly is too often. Too much work for the admins. They already have a lot to deal with.

**Maybe we should just keep it simple and have an "Appreciations" forum for anyone who wants to say something (POSITIVE!!) about someone else. **

(P.S. I would be happy to be the moderator for it! :* :D )

I think a forum for recognition would take away the specialness of it, because I think eventually all that would happen is everyone would compliment each other, and it would become normal. I think we should go for something special.

I belive that glorifying people in their individual forum would remove alot of the "help" feeling behind these forums.....

It's hard to explain, but when you set people at a higher standerd than everyone else by saying: "She's great!" it often causes us to lose site that this site isn't a beauty pagent, it's for helping :D However, I myself enjoy being complimented, and so I must say that I am "sitting on the fence"........To tell you the truth: the one thing that would change how I view the situation would be how it would be conducted, because as dtlweeds said: "eventually all that would happen is everyone would compliment each other"....

Besides, we all know who the better moderator is (the one that cares about you & not the image that you precieve of them) :)

Haha, Jake's "sitting on the fence" because he wants attention :P

Sounds like an idea... but as jake said, this isn't at all for glory... this is for giving and receiving help.

Yes, I didnt suggest a forum remember that, the recognition would be infrequent and special. I resent the idea of giving people recognition periodically, ie: weekly, monthly, yearly. It means someone always gets voted and its not about saying you in particular have done really well, thanks a lot.
