Common Chatroom Commands
Last Updated on Wednesday, 31 December 2008 13:09 Written by Adam Marshall Wednesday, 31 December 2008 13:01
- All Chat commands begin with the forward slash, "/". Anything else you type is considered text typed to the screen as normal conversation.
- All channel names begin with a pound sign, "#".
- Chat is not case sensitive. So you can use either upper, lower, or mixed case letters if you wish in your commands.
Note: the use of the "#" indicates that the channel name should be substituted...i.e. #teenadvice
- /me <action> - used to make action lines. (example: /me hugs some_person - This would display in the chat as: *OverDrive hugs some_person).
- /nick <new_nickname> - used to change your current nickname to something else. (example: /nick something_else).
- /away <away message> - used to tell others you are not currently at your computer when they message you or do a /whois on you. To set yourself back, type /away again. (example: /away I went to school).
- /ignore <nickname> - used to prevent someone from talking to you and from you seeing what they say. If a person is being a nuisance, this is what you type. (example: /ignore OverDrive).
- /quit <message> - used to quit the chat. A quit message may be added to the command, but is optional. (example: /quit or /quit see ya later!).
- /whois <nickname> - used to get info on a nick. (example: /whois OverDrive).
- /whowas <nickname> - used to get info on a nick that has just left IRC or a person who has just changed their nick. (example: /whowas OverDrive).
- /join <#> - used to join a channel. (example: /join #teenadvice).
- /part <#> - used to leave a channel (example: /part #teenadvice).
