Do You Have Any Bible Questions That I

Post by GodsChild7 » Thu Feb 03, 2005 12:36 am

If anyone has any Bible questions, or questions that deal with religion(Christianity, its the only one I know...), feel free to ask. I will help in anyway possible, and if I do not know the answer, I will search for someone who does. I'm not doing this to show off or anything, I'm doing it to help anyway I can......

Oh, I have one. What does Sodom and Gomorrah mean in english. Or what is the story in words I can understand.
You called yesterday to basically say

That you care for me but that you're just not in love

Immediately I pretended to be feeling similarly

And led you to believe I was O.K.

To just walk away from the one thing

That's unyielding and sacred to me

Well I guess I'm trying to be nonchalant about it

And I'm going to extremes to prove I'm fine without you

But in reality I'm slowly losing my my mind

Underneath the guise of a smile gradually I'm dying inside

Friends ask me how I feel and I lie convincingly

'Cause I don't want to reveal the fact that I'm suffering

So I wear my disguise 'til I go home at night

And turn down all the lights and then break down and cry

So what do you do when somebody you're devoted to

Suddenly just stops loving you and it seems they haven't got a clue

Of the pain that rejection is putting you through

Do you cling to your pride and sing "I will survive"

Do you lash out and say "How dare you leave this way"

Do you hold on in vain as they just slip away

Ok Sodom and Gomorrah were two corrupt cities (full of sin) and God sent Abraham into those cities to try and change them but they wanted to stay in sin. So in Genesis 18:20-21 the bible says "And the Lord said, because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; I will go down now, and whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not I will know"..... this means that the Lord was goin to go see if the people were doin what they were supposed to and if not then He was going to destroy the cities......then in Genesis 19:24 "Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and the fire from the LORD out of heaven"....then in Genesis 19:29 "And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain......."

I hope that this has helped you to better understand Sodom and Gomorrah and if not then please let me know

Thanks!

Yes, but why do people bring that up in reference to homosexuality?

This is one of the first times that homosexuality was mentioned in the bible, and they did these acts in these cities..
I'm a poor wayfaring stranger

While traveling thru this world of woe

Yet there's no sickness, toil, or danger

In that bright world to which I go

I'm going there to see my Father

I'm going there no more to roam

I'm only going over Jordan

I'm only going over home

I know dark clouds will hang 'round me,

I know my way is rough and steep

Yet beauteous fields lie just before me

Where God's redeemed their virgils keep

I'm going there to see my mother

She said she'd meet me when I come

I'm only going over Jordan

I'm only going over home

Oh, I see. It actually mentioned homosexuality in there though?

No, I don't believe that it did. The problem arises because people associate homosexuality with sodomy. Then they make the link between sodomy (a new, english word) to sodom (a city named well before the english language).

However, I'm not a bible expert, so I could be wrong. *shrug*

Friend,

There is a great theological argument about that topic, however the most compelling argument now says that there was never a word for homosexuality used in the bible and super extremist conservative Christians just connected and inturpreted the bible to say what they wanted it to.

I am Roman Catholic and I personally do not believe that those stories are connected in any way to homosexuality, they only thing that is similar is a homosexual raping, and saying that that is wrong, and who wouldn't agree with that, but it has nothing to do with a loving homosexual relationship in my opinion.....

here are some helpful links on the topic:

there are different verses in the bible, Old and New Testament, that talks about "man with man and woman with woman" as being wrong and sinful, as far as we know back then they didnt call it "homosexual", they just said (according to the bible) "man lie with mankind as he lieth with a woman...." Leviticus 20:17....there are other verses as well.....

Ok...The New Testament starts off talking about the birth and the life of Jesus....The first four books - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John- are known as the four Gospels of Jesus Christ....They talk all about the wonderful miracles that Chirst performed and about His teachings, and about Him dieing on the cross..In Acts, it talks about the wonderful promise that Jesus talked about, the Holy Ghost and talked about people recieving the Holy Ghost and it talks about the wonderful gifts that God gives through the Holy Ghost- such as : Speaking in Tongues - Interpretation of Tongues- and the gift of healing.....But all through the New Testament, there is an event that is talked about greatly, The End of Time.....It is described in great detail in the book of Revelation though....John the Revelator wrote this book along with John 1, 2 and 3...After Jesus was resurrected, He showed John the future and showed him the events that lead up to the End of Time....if there is anything else that you would like to know about the New Testament or if you would just like to know more, let me know and I will be more than glad to help.......:)

Seriously, don't quote leveticus when talking about "the bible says gays are bad," unless you follow every other rule in that book of the Bible. This includes, but is certainly not limited to: not eating seafood, not wearing clothes made of two different cloths, etc. You can't pick and choose whatever suits your needs.

(sorry, that just really gets under my skin when people do that)

I think you guys are misinterpreting what I said. I was telling her not to use leveticus as an example unless she follows every other rule in leveticus. I wasn't telling her not to use the Bible (simply because I haven't studied much of it).

Thank you Doug. I was about to say that.

God'schild - Don't you dare say that the bible says gays are bad. It says a bajillion other things are bad as well, and I'm sure you fit into one of those categories.

Please, don't say that again. You can say you don't belive in homosexuality, but don't you EVER say that gays are bad.

Cheers,

Jenna

GodsChild - Please read what I said. That is, don't use Leveticus to defend your opinion of homosexuals because every single rule in the chapter of the Bible is irrelevent. At least if you're going to use the Bible to defend your opinion, use a chapter from the New Testement (if you are a Christian) or the Old Testement if you are Jewish (I don't know what your religion is) that explicitly states what you believe. Otherwise, just don't use the Bible to back up what you're saying.

(People that use Leveticus to defend anything just irritate me, so my apologies to you if this seemed rude.)

The bible may have two different testaments but that doesnt mean that you shouldnt follow them just because there was some odd things that happened in the old one.. Such as when people sacrifised lambs or sheep or whatever.. The reason we dont do that n e more is because Jesus died for our sins so that we wouldnt have to do that n e more... Not necessarily so that we JUST wouldnt have to do that, but many other things..

Tell me silvertears, do you wear clothes of two different cloths (i.e. Polyester and Cotton)? Do you eat seafood (i.e. shrimp)? Do you eat pork? Do you think it's okay for a woman to have sex during her period?

The ONLY way that you can use leviticus to prove a point about homosexuality is if you do NONE of those things that I just mentioned (and there are many more.

Christians follow the teachings of Jesus. Did Jesus say anything against homosexuality? No? Hm...you must not be Christian then. *Shrug*
