Re: Quiz
? Belief in Deity
There is a Trinity of the Father, the Son (Christ), and the Holy Spirit that comprises one God Almighty.
? Incarnations
Jesus Christ is God's only incarnation and is God.
? Origin of Universe and Life
The biblical Book of Genesis is inerrant. Most Seventh-day Adventists hold that, although the universe and our planet are ancient, God created the ordered world and all life forms in less than seven, literally twenty-four hour, days, less than 10,000 years ago--thereby refuting most claims of modern science.
? After Death
Death results in unconsciousness. At any time now, Jesus Christ will return to raise to heaven all the righteous dead and living, resurrect and destroy the wicked and Satan here on earth, and then return the righteous to a paradisiacal earth for eternity with God.
? Why Evil?
Original sin--all people are inherently sinners, prone to evil and subject to Satan's temptations.
? Salvation
Salvation is only by the grace of God, through faith in Jesus Christ alone. But faith must be exhibited through action. Baptism (full immersion) is performed at age of accountability for those "born again" and is regarded as a demonstration of belief, a symbol of union with Christ and forgiveness of sins, and reception of the Holy Spirit. The faithful will obey God's commandments, acknowledge and repent their sins, observe the Sabbath on Saturday, adhere to church moral laws, restrictions, and sacraments, including baptism and communion, care for their body as a temple of the Holy Spirit. Living life as simply and naturally as possible, away from stressful influences, is encouraged. Some modes of entertainment (theater, billiard rooms, dance halls, saloons, most television, movies, etc.) are to be avoided. Schooling at home or at non-government church schools is recommended.
? Undeserved Suffering
Some suffering is caused by the inheritance of mortality originating from Adam and Eve's disobedience to God, which includes vulnerability to illness and disease. Also, Satan pervades the earth, causing pain and suffering. Many believe that suffering is God's design to test, teach, or strengthen belief in Him; the greater the suffering of innocent believers, the greater will be their reward after life.
? Contemporary Issues
Abortion has moral consequences and should only be performed for the most serious reasons. The church acknowledges compelling reasons for a woman to choose abortion, e.g., threat to the life of the woman, rape/incest, extreme congenital abnormalities, etc. After counseling, the final decision is regarded as her own--she is not to be coerced or condemned. Homosexuality is forbidden. Gender equality and womens rights are promoted, but women are not permitted at the highest levels of the church hierarchy and are generally regarded as subordinate to men. Marriage is permanent and divorce only permitted on grounds of adultery/fornication, abandonment by an unbelieving spouse, or physical violence. Remarriage is only permitted if one's spouse committed adultery/fornication. Working for peace is encouraged by the SDA church as a Christian value. Many SDAs refuse combat status in the armed forces, and the church urges strict control of semi- and automatic assault weapons. The church supports community activities for equal rights and justice, antipoverty, education, and the direct provision of health care facilities. The church operates a world-wide network of schools and health care institutions.
so there we go!

I have heard of exactly 0 of those. Roman Catholicism was 9th on my list. Methodism wasn't even on there. I wonder if it's even included in the survey.

? Belief in Deity
Not considered important. Most Humanists are atheists or agnostics.
? Incarnations
Same as above.
? Origin of Universe and Life
The scientific method is most respected as the means for revealing the mysteries of the origins of the universe and life.
? After Death
An afterlife or spiritual existence after death is not recognized.
? Why Evil?
No concept of ?evil.? Reasons for wrongdoing are explored through scientific methods, e.g. through study of sociology, psychology, criminology.
? Salvation
No concept of afterlife or spiritual liberation or salvation. Realizing ones personal potential and working for the betterment of humanity through ethical consciousness and social works are considered paramount, but from a naturalistic rather than supernatural standpoint.
? Undeserved Suffering
No spiritual reasons but rather a matter of human vulnerability to misfortune, illness, and victimization.
? Contemporary Issues
The American Humanist Association endorses elective abortion. Other contemporary views include working for equality for homosexuals, gender equality, a secular approach to divorce and remarriage, working to end poverty, promoting peace and nonviolence, and environmental protection.
I'm amazed nobody got what I dd.
Cheers,
Jenna

The tragedy is the ignorance behind the clean casket
On the outside, they look so good
They're walking to Wallstreet in a straightjacket...

Re: Quiz
I took that quiz a while ago and my top result was Secular Humanism, Jenna. I can't connect to beliefnet.com now, but my result would probably be the same if I did complete the quiz again. From memory, my second result was Unitarian Universalism.

Re: Quiz
Liberal Quakers are not Amish. The two both have a strong tradition of pacifism, but they are quite separate. A Quaker is a member of The Religious Society of Friends, founded in 1652 by George Fox. The Amish originated in Germany. Quakers do not live in their own communities. The modern Liberal Quakers (note the Liberal in Liberal Quakers ) are very progressive, with many local groups embracing same-sex marriages, for example.
Common Quaker beliefs:
Friends believe that there exists element of God's spirit in every human soul. Thus all persons have inherent worth, independent of their gender, race, age, nationality, religion, and sexual orientation. Their opposition to sexism, racism, religious intolerance, warfare and the death penalty comes from this belief.
Simplicity, pacifism, and inner revelation are long standing Quaker beliefs. Their religion does not consist of accepting specific beliefs or of engaging in certain practices; it involves each person's direct experience of God.
There is a strong mystical component to Quaker belief. In the moving words of one reviewer of this essay, "In Meeting for Worship, God is there. God is probably always there, but in Meeting, I am able to slow down enough to see God. The Light becomes tangible for me, a blanket of love, a hope made living."
They do not have a specific creed; however, many of the coordinating groups have created statements of faith. The statement by the largest Quaker body, the Friends United Meeting includes the beliefs in:
- true religion as a personal encounter with God, rather than ritual and ceremony
- individual worth before God
- worship as an act of seeking
- the virtues of moral purity, integrity, honesty, simplicity and humility
- Christian love and goodness
- concern for the suffering and unfortunate
- continuing revelation through the Holy Spirit
Many do not regard the Bible as the only source of belief and conduct. They rely upon their Inner Light to resolve what they perceive as the Bible's many contradictions. They also feel free to take advantage of scientific and philosophical findings from other sources.
Individual Quakers hold diverse views concerning life after death. Few believe in the eternal punishment of individuals in a Hell.
All aspects of life are sacramental; they do not differentiate between the secular and the religious. No one day or one place or one activity is any more spiritual than any other.

Re: Quiz
My top ten:
1. Orthodox Quaker (100%)
2. Orthodox Judaism (91%)
3. Eastern Orthodox (91%)
4. Roman Catholic (91%)
5. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (85%)
6. Seventh Day Adventist (84%)
7. Islam (82%)
8. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (82%)
9. Sikhism (79%)
10. Jehovah's Witness (78%)
That is really interesting! I'm roman Catholic, but its interesting to know I share similar beliefs to other religions, especially since I'd not heard of so many of them!
