Creationism V.s. Evolution
I decided to post a topic to spur some thoughts, first off I'd like you guys to answer question 1
1. Do you believe in Evolution? why? why not?
2. If you don't believe in evolution please explain your take on how humans were created. or if your believe in creationism please explain why
3. Do you believe that Evolution should be taught in classrooms? Should this subject be regulated by the federal government or the state government? If you do believe that Evolution should be taught in the classroom do you believe that creationism should be taught to students as well?
that's it, just trying to stick out some ideas and see what people think, its sort of my mini social experiment

Re: Creationism V.s. Evolution
I believe in evolution. Why? Personally, I find it a whole lot more plausable to believe we were once dinosaurs: than some being creating an entire race of living things, everything around it, and controlling every single destiny of the billions that are now in existence for all time. I do believe in fate, but not that one "creator" controls it. I see it more as a "evolutionary force".

I believe in evolution b/c A) it is more believable and more real and b/c they have found it as fact . . .
i believe that schools should teach fact not believe in schools ~ thus evolution should be taught and creationism should be thrown aside and not taught in school (or otherwise not anywhere but church where they are still in belief of it) . . .

i am unsure about evolution, but i do believe that all theories should be taught in the classroom not just one or the other that makes it seem like just the one is right so both of them or niether

Re: Creationism V.s. Evolution
I believe in both creation and evolution. I do not believe we started out as fish, or single celled organisms, ect. I believe in microcosmic evolution, ie the patterns of a large cat's fur markings to blend into environments, but I don't believe a cat will eventually turn into a monkey if he lives in the trees long enough. I think that at one point the world was created in a form, and then set on path where it grew and changed until today.
Jeff, while evolution may be proven, when talking about the origins of life, it's just as speculative as every other theory out there. It only appears as fact because of facts surrounding other aspects of evolution. Anywho, I don't think it really matters where we came from, because at the end of the day I'm still me, and I'm not going to feel a desire to bow down because I found out that an intelligent, omnipotent creature created me, nor will I feel the need to try and return to the ocean if I find out that my ancestors were merfishpeople.

Re: Creationism V.s. Evolution
I am an evolutionary baptist Christian, so yes, I believe in evolution, but I also believe in creationism.. how is that possible? well,, this is how I describe it to everyone:
First off, let me tell you a children's joke that I heard for most of my life:
A man asked God: "God, how much is a million years to you?"
God replied: "a second"
THe man then asked: "God, how much is a million dollars to you?"
God replied: " a penny"
The mas asked: "God, may I have a penny?"
God replied: "in a second"
so basically I use this joke to show that God's time is different than our time, a day to God is a million years to us. So the 7 days in which the world was created, was really like 7 million years, so God did have evolution and he guided it through those years until we reached the state of evolution that we are at now.
So, that's my belief, and as weird and dumb as it may seem to some, it makes perfect sense to me.
And as to whether or not creationism or evolution should be taught to students in school, I am against creationism being taught, because it is unfair to teach one religion in a school system, and completely disregard every other religion, unfortantely there is not enough time to teach every religion, therefore no religion should be taught. As for evolution, I think it should be taught, part of religion is having your beliefs tested, and also evolution doesn't really belong to one/any religious group. It is also a way of making sure individuals question what they believe, and don't follow something without evaluating alternatives. It brings forth questions, and that allows for people to ponder.

Re: Creationism V.s. Evolution
FINALLY PEOPLE ANSWERED!!!!! HAHA thank you guys for answering I appreciate that alot really. It seems that alot of people are going with evolution or both evolution and creationism. Well I believe evolution was how our life started, the process of adapting to our environment that helped to create us what we are today, of course a question like this still leaves alot of wholes open, how did we develop such powerful mental capacities? Our environment didn't necesarily ask for that, as a matter of fact considering that we were once hunters and gatherers I would assume that all of us would become muscular with alot of running power and great strength to tackle those large animals. Rather instead we developed a brain that eventaully allowed us to create an environment rather than adapt. Nonetheless I think evolution should be taught in classrooms and be federally regulated, I think creationism is still much too biblical to be placed into the educational context. Evolution uses science and logical reasoning to come up with the theory, not saying it's right but thats basically what education is, learning to use logical reasoning to understand the things around us and adapt. Well that's just me, again thanks alot people for answering!

Re: Creationism V.s. Evolution
if you want a broader knowledge, take an evolution class (or anthro class)
i am in anthro now and we are discussing evolution and how it is scientific fact and all of that, and how we evolve b/c of malfunctions genetically that adapt to the enviorment that take millions of years to become perminant...

Re: Creationism V.s. Evolution
lol I have a good knowledge of evolution and creationism as I tend to research most topics i'm interested on my own, I always do that with different religions and subjects iono often times I find myself sitting and I just start to think about things and then I pursue my curiosities by hitting the books. Besides I think classes if I feel are not necessary for me to succeed for my personal career goal i''m not going to waste my time with it, rather I'd just get lost in the books and facts while i research it myself, but thanks for the suggestion I appreciate that.

Re: Creationism V.s. Evolution
Next year I'm actually taking a course that they offer in university called Creation vs Evolution. First of all, I'm agnostic. I don't believe necissarily in God, but that there is some higher being (he/she could be like a pink elephant for all I care) that helped create the universe and "helped" along evolution to create us but doesn't play any role in our daily lives. I completely respect people's religious beliefs (I have a lot of friends who are morman and evangelics) until the point when they look down upon my beliefs cause I don't believe what they belive (thats just not cool). I love talking about this with many different people just too see their point of view.
I took an evolution class last year and oh my goodness is there a lot... By the end of the semester I had to know the evolution of fishes and where and when they diverged. Its so interesting. And, there is physical evidence for it!
But then I look at my microbiology class and its just like "holy shit the body is complex" and its hard for my mind to grasp around the concept that we came about by some random mutations.
I remember hearing a quote once... "Nature gave you eyes to see the world and a brain to understand it". To me, saying that God created everything was something that they came up with a couple thousand years ago to explain something that at the time they couldn't understand. Now, we have the technology to find and interpret fossils that I think we need to perhaps rethink the whole creationism aspect.
But, I'm totally for God in the sense of spiritual wholeness and way of life. If it makes you happy, then thats all that matters but it's not for me...

haha I see, wow amazing how this thing barely came alive about oh i don't know a month after I posted it, I was waiting for responses...none ever came and I gave up on this, then I saw responses and I was actually excited, I don't know I like arguing with people about these kinds of things, sometimes I'll even take the opposite end of everybody else (even it pisses em off) just so I can argue the point. I'm going to post up another topic soon once I come up with something. But thanks for the responses I really do appreciate that

I think they both should be taught in classrooms, just like different theories which are not proved yet. As in, we should tell students that there are many possibilities and we don't really know for fact how the world was created, so all we have left to do is to believe..

Hmm I see, so it seems like evolution is pretty much an accepted idea. Very interesting perspectives and approaches to the situation though. Thank you but I think this topic should be closed now lol how do you do that?

I do believe in evolution, yes. I believe that God orchestrated evolution, though, and made us the way we are from other creatures. I know evolution exists because bugs have begun to develop resistance to bug spray, which comes from evolution.
I think that evolution, taught in the classrooms, in the scientific way to go about it. Church and state are seperate in America, and if people are taught that God created the universe, church and state mix.

There is a difference between macro-evolution and micro-evolution, sbloemeke. Building a resistance to bug spray is an example of micro-evolution. I seriously doubt that in three thousand years bugs will have changed because a few built up resistances to bug spray.
I believe in evolution, yes, but not the macro-evolution that it seems the above believe in. There are things that keep me from dropping all of my "religous" beliefs. Some examples:
1) If natural choice only occurs when there's life, then how did the first cell even come out of the "goo?"
2) Say that did happen somehow, under what circumstances would cells start to bind together to create muli-cellular beings if there wasn't any threat to the single-celled beings?
3) The whale. Why would it evolve so it went on land and then go back into the sea?

Okay, first, evolution is not 'proven.' However, it is also not "just as speculative as every other theory out there." Not at all; evolution is the dominating theory for explaining the origins, and the morphing of life forms. Evolution is so scientifically grounded that there exists no valid competing theory on the origins of life. Scientific theories are not simply suggestions, or even theories that "just make sense," (in particular, Quantum Mechanics makes absolutely no sense, yet it's experiments are some of the most empirically confirmed scientific inquiries out there). A scientific theory has guidelines, and being that evolution is the only theory for the origin of life that meets these guidelines with flying colors (aside from falsification in regards to the history of science), it should be the only theory for the origin of life taught in schools. Creationism is not science, intelligent design is not science, scientology is not science. To say that any other theory on life is equal to evolution is like saying that my dog demon theory, that when I drop a rock, dog demons are come and carry it down to the ground, is just a valid as the theory of gravity.

1.) the theory of natural selection regards changing life forms, not the exact origins of life. The theory you are referring to the soup theory, that from primeval soup certain chemical bonds occurred due to the environmental factors and atmospheric status of earth at the time. These chemical bonds eventually would form DNA, and other microstructures would eventually form into parts of a single cell. Scientists have actually tested this hypothesis and have had promising results.
2.) Those circumstances are factors in the composition of the earth at the time that promoted such bonds, just as the conditions of earth today form our climate and specific phenomena such as tornadoes to occur. It's no different, just different circumstances. Droughts crack the earth, atmospheric pressure causes tornadoes, so whatever the conditions were when life first sprang is equivalent to the fact that current conditions cause such phenomena.
3.) Environmental pressures? That's not much of a hard-one.

i believe god started everything and he creat somethings, like air water bacteria thingys, and light and studff like that and i think that everything else evolved from the stuff god created in the beginning.....which like means i believe in both but niether by them selves....i think that if evolution is taught in school that creationism should be taught too just to show what different people believe...
